AI programming tools are revolutionizing the application development landscape. Apple's App Store saw a staggering 84% year-over-year increase in new apps in Q1 of this year, reversing a 48% cumulative decline from 2016 to 2024. Tools like Claude Code and Codex, representing "vibe coding," have significantly lowered the development barrier, but Apple is increasing its control over vibe coding applications.

After years of dormancy, Apple's App Store is experiencing an explosion of new apps driven by AI.

According to data from market research firm Sensor TowerIn the first quarter of 2026, the number of new apps launched globally on the Apple App Store surged 84% year-over-year to 235,800, continuing the strong rebound that began in 2025.

This growth rate marks a complete reversal of the app store's nearly decade-long decline—the number of new apps had cumulatively decreased by 48% between 2016 and 2024.

The main driver of this growth is AI-assisted "vibe coding" tools, such as Anthropic's Claude Code and OpenAI's Codex. These tools enable non-professional programmers to generate usable applications simply by following text prompts, while significantly improving the programming efficiency of professional developers.

at the same time,Apple has taken control measures on some native Vibe Coding apps and has also prevented Vibe Coding apps from updating their features after being listed on the App Store.

The decade-long downward trend suddenly reversed

The sudden rebound in the number of new apps stands in stark contrast to the previous long slump.

According to Sensor Tower data, the number of new apps added to Apple's App Store each year has been shrinking for a considerable period. Between 2016 and 2024, the cumulative decline reached a staggering 48%.

However, this trend has fundamentally changed since 2025: the number of new apps launched in 2025 increased by 30% year-on-year, reaching nearly 600,000; in 2026, the growth rate accelerated further, with the year-on-year increase expanding to 84% in the first quarter.

"We've seen an explosive growth in new applications over the past year, which coincides with the widespread adoption of intelligent programming tools that are bridging the gap in application development," said Abraham Yousef, senior analyst at Sensor Tower.

AI programming tools unlock the "tap" for developers.

This surge in new applications is driven by the rapid adoption of the Vibe Coding tool.

Vibe coding refers to a programming method that uses AI models to automatically generate code based on natural language prompts.

Anthropic's Claude Code was released in a limited preview in February 2025 and opened to a wider range of users in May of the same year; OpenAI's Codex was released in a limited preview in May 2025 and officially expanded to a wider range of users in October of the same year.

The core value of these tools lies in lowering the development threshold: non-programmers can directly generate runnable applications through text descriptions, while developers with programming skills can produce code at a speed far exceeding that of manual writing.

Although it is currently difficult to accurately quantify the proportion of applications developed using AI tools, given the rapid popularization of these tools, the prevailing view is that most new applications rely on AI assistance.

Apple steps in to regulate and restrict Vibe coding.

The influx of new applications has also brought new challenges to Apple's ecosystem management.

As previously reported by The Information, Apple has begun to restrict native apps that allow users to perform vibe coding directly on iOS devices: Replit's vibe coding app has been blocked from updating, and another app called Anything has been removed from the App Store altogether.

Apple stated that the action was not specifically targeting the Vibe Coding app, but rather was enforcing existing review rules. This rule prohibits rewriting code in a way that substantially alters its functionality without the approval of the review team.

Apple's control measures have not fundamentally curbed the emergence of new applications—the Vibe Coding tool can also run on personal computers.

According to a Replit spokesperson, Replit users have built and published nearly 5,000 App Store apps through the platform in the past few months; Anything CEO Dhruv Amin also stated that since its launch, thousands of apps have been published to the App Store using the tool.

Behind the surge in quantity: Quality concerns emerge

The rapid expansion in the number of applications has not necessarily led to a corresponding improvement in overall quality.

Developers and consumers are increasingly concerned about the influx of low-quality apps into the App Store. This abundance of low-quality content makes it harder for users to discover high-quality apps.

Matthew Cassinelli, a consultant who focuses on helping developers integrate Apple's AI tools, points out: "The number of apps has increased dramatically, but the amount of time users spend using them each day doesn't necessarily increase. Most people actually only use a handful of apps consistently."

The dramatic surge in new applications is particularly striking in its historical context. Analysts point out that the slump of the previous years stemmed from the continuously rising costs of developing high-quality applications before the advent of the Vibe Coding tool, as well as the crowding-out pressure exerted on small and medium-sized developers by the monopolistic effects of large platforms such as Meta and ByteDance.

Today, AI tools have leveled the playing field again, but how to strike a balance between quantitative expansion and quality assurance will be the core issue facing the Apple ecosystem in the next stage.

Apple has become the biggest enemy of Vibe Coding entrepreneurs.
Vibe Coding promises a future where ordinary people can create software. This future is coming, but on Apple's turf, it needs a license first.

First-quarter economic growth may be at the lower end of policy targets.
China Merchants Securities believes that, based on the released data, the industrial recovery in January and February was mainly supported by equipment manufacturing, high technology, and the export chain. Entering March, the manufacturing PMI rebounded to 50.4%, the production index rose to 51.4%, and the new orders index rose to 51.6%, indicating that after the Spring Festival disruption subsided, corporate production activities accelerated significantly, and improved orders also provided some support for production. The first-quarter growth rate is likely to be higher than the lower limit of the policy target of 4.5%, but before a stronger recovery in consumption and the real estate sector, the probability of significantly exceeding the upper limit of the target is not high; it may be recorded at around 5.0%.
