Litecoin shouldn't exist. Launched in 2011, it watched as thousands of fancy cryptocurrencies promised to replace it, only to quietly eliminate almost all of them. This survivor, abandoned by all, is about to do something completely unexpected. In this conversation, Roc and Aztec of LitVM detail a major extension that finally brings smart contracts to one of the oldest brands in the cryptocurrency space. They believe the recent decline (which they attribute to predatory short selling) masks a much quieter trend: funds are steadily flowing back into mature, traditional assets that have withstood over a decade of market cycles. The project itself is a specially built Layer 2 (L2) modular stack that natively supports the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), making Litecoin compatible with the EVM. The influx of US stock assets into cryptocurrency exchanges has many people's initial reaction is that it's bad news for altcoins—the market size is limited, and adding another type of asset simply diverts funds. However, looking at it over the long term, this consolidation is actually beneficial. Take cryptocurrency itself as an example: the earliest exchanges only allowed the purchase of Bitcoin, then Litecoin, then Ethereum, and only later did a bunch of altcoins emerge. The addition of altcoins didn't kill off Bitcoin; Bitcoin continued to rise. On the contrary, these new assets brought a large number of new people and new money into the market. Consolidation increases the overall popularity and liquidity of the pool, not it's a zero-sum game where existing assets are taken away. The entry of US stocks is essentially another instance of "bringing more people in." PS: Altcoins refer to all cryptocurrencies other than Bitcoin and stablecoins.

Cryptocurrency fund inflows have fallen to their lowest point since October 2024. According to DefiLlama data, monthly inflows to digital asset management firms (DATs) plummeted in May, totaling approximately $180 million, the lowest level since October 2024. This drop represents a 95% decrease from April's $4.4 billion and is about 93% lower than the average monthly inflow from January to May. This decline follows two exceptionally strong months, with inflows reaching $4.2 billion in March and increasing to $4.4 billion in April, highlighting a rapid shift in market momentum. Looking at the composition of May's inflows, Bitcoin-focused fund management firms remained the dominant force, contributing $177 million, accounting for approximately 98% of total inflows, but this is also a significant decrease from April's $3.8 billion. In addition, trading activity in non-Bitcoin assets was minimal, with small inflows into ZCash, Sui, and Story, while Litecoin recorded an outflow of $1.89 million.

Cryptocurrencies are facing severe security and censorship challenges, and decentralized exchanges (DEXs) are unfortunately bearing the brunt. The past few weeks have witnessed a series of hacks, exploits, and thefts in the cryptocurrency space. In the past, these attacks primarily targeted centralized exchanges. Sometimes, thieves can easily take funds and disappear without a trace; but sometimes, their transfer attempts are triggered by other exchanges, freezing or blocking the flow of funds as they pass through those exchanges, thus preventing the transfer. If DEXs truly deserve the name, they cannot do this. By definition, DEXs allow anyone to use them; the protocol has no built-in transaction censorship mechanisms, and there is no centralized decision-maker who can arbitrarily filter, suspend, or censor transactions. The primary problem is the centralized freezing of funds. If a stablecoin is deposited into a DEX, and its issuer subsequently decides to freeze that stablecoin, the entire network will immediately face solvency issues and ultimately collapse. Transactions cannot resume until the funds are unfrozen, but this may require fund recovery, identity verification, or other functions that truly decentralized exchanges cannot perform. The second, and most challenging, issue is cybersecurity. Many blockchains, especially Proof-of-Work (PoW) blockchains, are susceptible to chain rollbacks. Litecoin and Monero, two major blockchains, have both experienced chain rollbacks in the past year. Decentralized exchanges (DEXs) require extremely high confirmation counts, but the difficulty lies in the inability to accurately determine the required number of confirmations. Most transactions are not truly secure, thus requiring risk assessment. We cannot guarantee that everything on our end is perfect. However, hopefully, supporting Dash is less risky for DEXs than for most other cryptocurrencies. Dash has no central issuing authority, therefore there is no risk of funds being frozen, even if stolen funds are not frozen. This might be a disadvantage for some, but it is an advantage for DEXs. Furthermore, Dash boasts deterministic finality within approximately one second and has chain reorganization protection. This means that decentralized exchanges (DEXs) can rest easy, as transactions cannot be reversed. The decentralized exchange (DEX) space is developing at an astonishing pace, and in a few years, they may look completely different, depending on how they address the industry's latest challenges. Five weeks ago, I wrote an in-depth analysis of zcash:native for @RealVision Pro. Several points impressed me at the time, but most have yet to be mentioned. 🧵 Transaction fees skyrocketed from around $10 per day in 2023 to over $10,000 per day in early 2024. That's a 1000x increase before the price surge. Natural demand for block space had been building for almost a year before the market noticed. I've never seen anything like it before. Zero-knowledge privacy doesn't decrease with the scale of AI. The security of Monero Ring, Bitcoin CoinJoin, and Litecoin MWEB all decrease as Chainalysis and large models improve. Completely shielded zcash:native transactions leave no on-chain data available for analysis. Its structure is fundamentally different from all its competitors. Over the past 365 days, zcash:native ranked third in total transaction fees on the L1 blockchain, reaching $356.9 million, ahead of ETH ($338 million) and BTC ($137 million). Only Tron and Solana had higher fees. Such a large transaction fee scale is rare for a small privacy coin. [See Appendix 10] zcash:native uses Bitcoin's monetary architecture: a fixed supply of 21 million coins, PoW, and UTXO. It addresses a weakness of Bitcoin. Its market capitalization is only 0.4% of Bitcoin's, a gap that seems underestimated. zcash:native miners earn 10 times more in fees than BTC miners. The fee-to-reward ratio is 3.3% for zcash:native and 0.3% for BTC. Its security budget is also funded more extensively than BTC's. The Bitcoin OG community has been accumulating zcash:native for some time now. Winklevoss led a $59 million funding round for Cypherpunk Technologies, which currently holds 1.78% of the ZEC supply and aims for 5%. Naval Ravikant, Balaji Srinivasan, Paradigm, a16z Crypto, and Coinbase Ventures all participated in ZODL's $25 million seed round. These are not momentum funds. Since the report's release, zcash:native has risen by over 100%. Multiple extension signals are currently appearing on both the absolute and relative value charts for zcash:native/$BTC. Protected trading activity has not increased significantly during this rally; therefore, due to persistent negative funding, derivatives trading appears to have absorbed most of the upward momentum, leading to a market squeeze.
