XRP was created in 2012 by Jed McCaleb, David Schwartz, and Arthur Britto. McCaleb had previously worked on earlier cryptocurrency projects. Shortly after launch, Chris Larsen joined McCaleb to co-found OpenCoin, which was later renamed Ripple Labs. It is important to note that Ripple Labs operates only about 6% of all validators on the XRP Ledger network. The XRPL itself is a decentralized, open-source project with independent validators run by universities, exchanges, individuals, and other organizations worldwide.

Development began in 2011, and the XRP Ledger officially launched in 2012 with a total supply of 100 billion pre-mined tokens. In 2020, the US Securities and Exchange Commission filed a lawsuit against Ripple Labs alleging XRP was an unregistered security. In 2024, the two parties reached a settlement, with the SEC dropping most charges and providing regulatory clarity for XRP. Throughout 2025, major financial institutions including Fidelity and Invesco launched XRP exchange-traded funds, and Vanguard opened XRP ETF access to its 50 million clients in December 2025, signaling mainstream financial acceptance.

The XRP Ledger employs a unique consensus mechanism called the Ripple Protocol Consensus Algorithm, fundamentally different from both Proof of Work and Proof of Stake. The network consists of independent validators distributed globally, each maintaining a Unique Node List of trusted peers. Through multiple rounds of voting every few seconds, transactions achieve finality when at least 80% of the UNL agrees. This enables confirmation in just 3 to 5 seconds, throughput of up to 1,500 transactions per second, and fees below $0.001 per transaction with minimal energy consumption. This architecture prioritizes financial-grade settlement speed and efficiency over the mining-based security model of Bitcoin.

XRP has a fixed total supply of 100 billion tokens, created entirely at genesis with no mining or inflation mechanism. Currently, approximately 60.3 billion XRP is in circulation, while roughly 39.7 billion remains held by Ripple Labs in escrow accounts, releasing up to 1 billion XRP monthly for operational and liquidity purposes. The economic design aims to maintain supply stability through locking and gradual release mechanisms, avoiding the devaluation risks associated with unlimited issuance. Market participants have raised concerns about concentration risk given the large holdings maintained by a single entity.

The XRP Ledger operates through a federated consensus mechanism with governance divided into technical and ecosystem layers. Technically, the network is maintained by multiple independent validators distributed worldwide, meaning no single entity can unilaterally modify the ledger rules. Ripple Labs, as a commercial entity, develops software and promotes the XRPL ecosystem but does not control the network. Major protocol upgrades typically require community discussion and validator approval. In recent years, the XRPL community has progressively introduced more decentralized governance initiatives, including developer funds and community grant programs.

XRP primary use case is real-time cross-border payment settlement, with partner financial institutions including Tranglo, SBI Remit, and Banco Rendimento. Banks using the network can reduce settlement times from days to seconds while significantly lowering costs. XRP also functions as a bridge currency on the XRP Ledger decentralized exchange, supporting automated market maker mechanisms and trading pairs. The XRP Ledger is expanding into new domains including central bank digital currency issuance, asset tokenization, NFT minting, and decentralized finance applications, while actively exploring interoperability solutions with multiple central banks worldwide.
