According to a CNN report on the 7th, the White House attempted to downplay speculation that the United States might use nuclear weapons in Iran and refuted a social media post purportedly from Vice President Vance suggesting that such a measure might be taken.
The report stated that Vance told reporters in Hungary that day, "We have some tools in our 'toolbox,' although we haven't decided to use them yet. But the US president has the right to decide whether to use these tools. If Iran doesn't change its course of action, the president will decide to use them." This statement, along with US President Trump's threat on social media against Iran that "tonight, the entire civilization will perish," has sparked some online speculation that Vance was referring to the use of nuclear weapons.
The report said that in response to a post on social media by the Democratic Party that "Vance implied that Trump might use nuclear weapons," the White House responded via social media: "There is absolutely nothing in the Vice President's remarks here that 'literally' implies this."
The report also said that the online disputes highlight the anxiety emerging in the White House as Trump's "deadline" for Iran approaches.
At a White House press conference on the 6th, Trump said that whether the war against Iran is about to escalate or is nearing its end depends on Iran's response to his "deadline" of 8 p.m. Eastern Time on the 7th (8 a.m. Beijing Time on the 8th).
