Telegram is further consolidating its influence over the TON ecosystem. CEO Pavel Durov stated that Toncoin plans to be renamed Gram, reverting to the token name from the project's original white paper, while The Open Network will continue to use the TON brand.

The name change will be completed within three weeks.

Durov stated on his official channel that Gram was the original name of the TON currency in the initial white paper, and this adjustment is part of "going back to the beginning" and will pave the way for subsequent actions.

According to him, the token name change is expected to take about three weeks to complete. This adjustment only involves the token name; the network itself will not be renamed and will continue to use the TON identifier.

Telegram continues to strengthen its dominant position.

This name change is a continuation of Telegram's recent efforts to strengthen its influence over TON. Durov stated in May that Telegram would replace the TON Foundation as the main driving force behind the network's development and become its largest validator.

Meanwhile, TON has recently lowered transaction fees and increased block processing speed to improve transaction processing efficiency. Telegram was originally the earliest initiator of the TON project, but abandoned the original plan in 2020 due to a regulatory dispute with the U.S. SEC. The project was subsequently continued by community developers.

TON prices rose after the news.

The market reacted immediately to the news. Following the announcement, TON rose more than 13% within 24 hours, reaching a high of $2.26 before falling back to around $2.12.

Looking at a longer timeframe, TON has risen by approximately 58% in the past month. However, compared to the high of $8.25 reached during the Telegram blockchain game boom in 2024, the current price has still fallen by about 74%. At that time, projects such as Hamster Kombat and Notcoin briefly boosted the popularity of the TON ecosystem.
