In a recent interview, Walmart CEO John Furner stated that the retail industry is constantly changing, and one of the most important capabilities for leaders is to remain adaptable in a constantly evolving environment.
He recounted his career path at Walmart over 30 years, stating that he started in 1993 with a part-time position at a store's garden center, and gradually rose through the ranks to become a store manager, regional manager, and headquarter management, eventually taking over higher-level Walmart operations.
Furner also mentioned that managers not only need to respond quickly to change, but also need to clearly communicate that change. He believes that leaders need to listen to their teams, explain the reasons behind the adjustments, and clarify how these changes relate to the company's overall goals.
Walmart is also pushing forward with technology and store upgrades. The company is introducing the AI shopping assistant Sparky and plans to renovate approximately 650 stores this year to adapt to changing consumer demands.
