Virgin Galactic's stock price rose as high as $7.95 on Monday, a nearly 29% increase in a single day, making it one of the most watched stocks in the U.S. space sector that day. Factors driving the stock's strength included the disclosure of new shareholder holdings, the resumption of flight testing, and increased market sentiment surrounding SpaceX's potential IPO.
New shareholders disclose their holdings.
According to filings with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, Rich Huang and RichRich Capital LLC reported a significant stake in Virgin Galactic. The filings show that RichRich Capital holds approximately 4.87 million shares, and another approximately 5.58 million shares are related to Huang, bringing their combined holdings to over 10% of the company's shares.
The disclosure of large holdings is usually interpreted by the market as a sign of optimism about the company's future progress. For Virgin Galactic, the timing of this disclosure, coinciding with a key operational milestone, further amplified market attention.
Gliding tests will continue in the third quarter.
In addition to the news of shareholding, Virgin Galactic's resumption of flight testing also boosted investor sentiment. The company recently restarted gliding flight testing of the VSS Unity at Spaceport America in New Mexico, ending a long period of flight suspension.
Management currently plans to continue with further glide tests in the third quarter of 2026 and initiate rocket-powered flight tests in the fourth quarter. These tests will pave the way for the company's next-generation Delta-class spacecraft program and are also related to its pace of commercial expansion.
SpaceX is expected to boost the sector.
A legal settlement disclosed last week is also seen as a positive factor. Although the payment amount is not large, the market believes it signifies an easing of a legal uncertainty that has been weighing on the company's valuation since 2022.
Meanwhile, the space sector as a whole was also boosted by expectations of a potential SpaceX IPO. Related speculation increased trading activity in the sector and drove renewed investment in commercial space companies. Virgin Galactic's current revenue remains limited, but the market is more focused on its test flight milestones in the next few quarters.
