A Bitcoin theft case in the United States involving approximately $245 million has further fueled investigations into attempted kidnapping and law enforcement corruption. Federal prosecutors allege that defendant Adam Iza attempted to kidnap the parents of those involved to coerce them into handing over a portion of the stolen money.

The kidnapping occurred after the currency theft.

The case details show that in August 2024, a couple in Connecticut were forced to stop their car by several people and then dragged out of their vehicle and crammed into a van. Police quickly tracked down the vehicle after receiving a report from a witness. The suspects attempted to flee, but failed, and the couple were taken to the hospital and later discharged.

Federal investigators subsequently linked the case to a Bitcoin theft that occurred the previous month. Prosecutors allege that the couple's son, Veer Chetal, along with two others, impersonated Google technical support personnel and cryptocurrency exchange customer service representatives to swindle 4,100 bitcoins from a Washington resident, at the time worth approximately $245 million.

Iza is accused of attempting to extort stolen money.

Prosecutors say the perpetrators squandered the stolen money on luxury cars, jewelry, clothing, luxury home rentals, and nightclub spending. Veer Chetal pleaded guilty last November, while the other two defendants denied the charges.

U.S. prosecutors say Adam Iza and another defendant, James Schwab, planned to kidnap Veer Chetal's parents to extort money from them. The two then recruited six men to travel to Connecticut, covering their travel and accommodation expenses. Court documents show that these men scouted the victim's location before committing the crime.

Iza, 25, who prosecutors say called himself a "godfather," pleaded guilty this week to conspiracy to disrupt business by robbery. Federal prosecutors are seeking a minimum of 14 years in prison.

The California case also involved police assistance.

The six perpetrators in connection with the kidnapping, all from Florida, have pleaded guilty to the charges. Two have been sentenced to 11 years in prison, while the others are awaiting sentencing.

In addition to the Connecticut case, Iza had previously been under federal investigation in California. Prosecutors allege that he had a long history of obtaining funds and property through extortion, fraud, and abuse of law enforcement resources, and that he hired off-duty officers as private enforcers to handle personal and business disputes.

According to prosecutors, Iza paid approximately $100,000 per month for security services from a security company founded by a Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department officer who also employed other officers. Prosecutors allege that these individuals used law enforcement databases to search for targets and obtained search warrants under false pretenses.

Additional information:Iza also pleaded guilty in another case in California this January. He admitted to defrauding more than $37 million between 2020 and 2022 by illegally accessing Meta's business management accounts and related credit lines; several police officers have also been charged in the related investigations.
