Avalanche was launched by Ava Labs, founded in 2018 by Cornell University professor Emin Gun Sirer, alongside Cornell computer science PhD candidates Kevin Sekniqi and Maofan Ted Yin. Gun Sirer is a veteran cryptographic researcher who designed a peer-to-peer virtual currency concept six years before Bitcoin was released, and contributed to Bitcoin scaling and Ethereum research prior to the 2016 DAO hack. The project raised seed funding from Polychain, Andreessen Horowitz and Balaji Srinivasan, followed by a $42 million ICO in 2020 completed in under 24 hours.

Mainnet launched in September 2020 with its novel consensus mechanism. Subnet functionality expanded the network use cases into enterprise and institutional applications.

Avalanche operates a unique three-chain architecture: the X-Chain handles asset creation and exchange using the Avalanche consensus mechanism with DAG technology; the C-Chain hosts smart contracts and DApps with an EVM-compatible Avalanche Virtual Machine using the Snowman consensus; the P-Chain coordinates validators, tracks subnets and enables new subnet creation. All three chains are secured by the Primary Network, a special subnet. The Avalanche consensus mechanism uses random polling of validators on a DAG rather than traditional leader-based consensus, enabling immediate finalization without blocks.

AVAX has a fixed total supply of 720 million tokens with no inflation after the initial distribution period. Token distribution includes seed and private sales at 6 percent combined, 10 percent public sale released over 18 months, 9.26 percent for the foundation over ten years, 7 percent community endowment over 12 months, 5 percent for strategic partners over four years, 10 percent for the team over four years, and 50 percent allocated for staking rewards. Current staking rewards are approximately 11.57 percent annually, with a minimum staking requirement of 2,000 AVAX for a minimum duration of two weeks.

Avalanche employs a validator-based governance system where the network is secured by validators staking AVAX tokens. The P-Chain coordinates validator activities and subnet management. Subnet validators can enforce custom requirements including geographic distribution or regulatory compliance for private blockchains. Validator rewards are distributed through the staking mechanism and governance proposals can be submitted by token holders to influence network upgrades and parameter adjustments. The three-chain architecture itself reflects a governance philosophy of separation of concerns, with each chain serving a distinct purpose and governed by its own consensus rules.

Avalanche primarily serves as a high-performance smart contract platform for DeFi applications, with the C-Chain hosting most DApps and supporting EVM-compatible development. The X-Chain facilitates asset creation and token swaps with fixed transaction fees of 0.001 AVAX. Subnets enable enterprises and institutions to create custom validator sets with customized rules, making Avalanche suitable for institutional blockchain deployments. The platform competes with Ethereum for DeFi liquidity and has attracted major projects through its interoperability bridges, lower fees and faster finality compared to older layer-1 networks.
