According to the Financial Times, OpenAI plans to release a revamped version of ChatGPT in the coming weeks. The new version will include programming tools and AI agent capabilities, aiming to make ChatGPT a unified portal for more paid products and services.
Targeting enterprise customers and commercialization
The report points out that OpenAI hopes to use this to increase its appeal to enterprise customers and further improve its profitability ahead of a potential initial public offering. The strategy is to attract a large number of free users to ChatGPT first, and then gradually encourage them to switch to paid tools.
One of the products mentioned is the programming tool Codex. Following this direction, ChatGPT is no longer just a chat interface, but will also serve distribution and conversion functions, directing users to higher-value AI services.
Product focus returns to ChatGPT
The Financial Times quoted a senior OpenAI employee as saying, "The chat is over." This doesn't mean ChatGPT has been abandoned, but rather reflects the company's shift away from its single chat tool positioning and towards a more comprehensive product platform.
This direction is not new. Over the past year, there have been numerous reports that OpenAI intends to promote a "super app" strategy, hoping to integrate multiple AI capabilities into a single product.
Independent product lines may be scaled back.
The Wall Street Journal reported in March that this plan represents a significant shift in OpenAI's strategy. Previously, the company launched several standalone products by 2025, but management is now reportedly reducing this fragmented approach.
The report also mentioned that OpenAI executives are abandoning some projects internally referred to as "side missions," including the video generation product Sora. This suggests the company may be refocusing more resources on the ChatGPT main platform to improve user retention, paid conversions, and overall competitiveness.
