Sui Network stated that the Sui blockchain has resumed normal operation after a shutdown of approximately 6 hours. According to the team, the network experienced a pause at 14:15 (UTC) on May 28 and was fully restored at 20:32.
The problem is related to a version update.
Public information indicates that this outage was related to a crash vulnerability in software version 1.72. The problem occurred in the gas billing logic, causing network processing to be disrupted and on-chain activities to be temporarily halted.
This means the malfunction did not originate from an external attack, but rather from a software issue introduced after the upgrade. The team stated that a more detailed incident analysis will be released later.
Several protocols temporarily suspended service
During the network outage, several protocols within the Sui ecosystem were affected, including Cetus, NAVI, and Panzerdogs. Activities related to the USDC stablecoin built on Sui were also temporarily suspended.
For users, the most direct impact of this type of outage is a temporary interruption of transactions, clearing, and on-chain interactions. Although the network resumes operation after service is restored, application availability is significantly reduced during the outage.
- The shutdown will begin at 14:15 on May 28 (UTC).
- Full recovery time: May 28, 20:32 (UTC)
- Scope of impact: Sui ecosystem protocol and USDC related activities
The team stated that there were no financial losses.
Sui Network stated that no user funds were lost in this incident. However, this shutdown once again reflects the operational risks of public blockchains during version upgrades, especially the possibility that changes in underlying logic can quickly spread throughout the entire ecosystem.
With the network restored, the outside world will now focus on the team's post-incident analysis and whether they will adjust subsequent software release and testing processes.
