John Jumper has announced his departure from DeepMind to join Anthropic. Jumper previously led the AlphaFold team and shared the 2024 Nobel Prize with DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis.

From DeepMind to Anthropic

Jumper stated on X that it was a "real adventure" for Hassabis to put him in charge of the AlphaFold team just six months after he graduated with his PhD. He also said that DeepMind is a special place and he will continue to follow the team's future achievements.

AlphaFold brings reputation

Jumper and Hassabis won the 2024 Nobel Prize for AlphaFold, an AI model that predicts the three-dimensional structure of proteins based on gene sequences.

AI talent continues to move around

Bloomberg reports that Jumper was also a key member of Google's team developing programming tools. Just this week, Character AI co-founder Noam Shazeer also announced his departure from DeepMind to join OpenAI.
