Sources say Apple is moving forward with the development of the second-generation iPhone Air, aiming for a spring 2027 release. The new device, codenamed V62, has entered advanced testing phases and its upgrades focus on the camera and battery life.
New dual rear cameras
The original iPhone Air is slated for release in September 2025, emphasizing a slim and lightweight design. However, its single rear camera configuration has been a major point of criticism from users. According to the disclosed testing plan, the next-generation model will include a second rear ultra-wide-angle lens to compensate for its limitations in photography capabilities.
This means Apple hopes to narrow the gap in imaging capabilities between the Air and Pro series while maintaining a slim and lightweight design. The report mentions that one of the most common negative feedback regarding the current $999 model is its relatively weak rear camera.
Battery life remains a key area for improvement.
Besides the camera, Apple is also working on improving battery life for the new phones. Because the Air series is relatively thin, there is limited space to accommodate a larger battery, so research and development efforts are mainly focused on improving energy efficiency and increasing battery capacity when possible.
However, the report also points out that the relevant plan has not yet been finalized. Apple is still weighing whether to rely more on software and hardware energy efficiency optimization or to strive for more battery space through structural design.
Release time changed to phased implementation
The release date of this model also reflects Apple's adjustment to the iPhone release schedule. According to reports, Apple is no longer releasing the entire product line all at once in September, but instead is launching it in stages.
The high-end models will continue to be unveiled in the fall, including the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and a foldable phone. Approximately six months later, the standard iPhone 18 and the updated Air will follow.
This arrangement helps to extend the sales cycle of new products and also allows products at different price points to have more independent exposure windows. For Air, avoiding a simultaneous launch with the Pro series may help to increase its presence.
It will be equipped with the A20 Pro variant chip.
In terms of performance, the second-generation iPhone Air is said to use a variant of the A20 Pro chip. This chip architecture is expected to be used first in iPhone models released in the fall of 2026.
If this arrangement is true, the Air series will further align with high-end models in terms of processors. Apple clearly hopes to position the Air as a product that balances a slim and lightweight design, everyday performance, and a basic high-end experience, in order to maintain a clearer position as the product line continues to expand.
